What Is Science?

• Science is a way of thinking, observing, and doing things to understand the world and uncover its secrets.
• It starts small — A single grain of sand, a blade of grass — science can begin anywhere, at any size.
• It needs curiosity — The one quality every scientist needs most is curiosity — the drive to ask “why?”
• It never stops — From a mountain to the whole universe, there's always something new to wonder about.

• Discoveries can come from the most unexpected places — connecting everything from living things to the stars.

When Your Pen Stops Writing...

• You don't need a laboratory to think like a scientist — you already do it when something ordinary goes wrong.
• The problem — Your pen suddenly stops writing. What do you do next?
• The everyday fix — You guess a reason — maybe the ink is finished — and you test your guess by checking the refill. If you're wrong, you guess again and test that instead.

The Scientific Method

• In one line — This step-by-step way of solving a problem — observe, question, guess, test, analyse — is called the scientific method.

Anyone Can Work Like a Scientist

• A scientist is simply someone who follows the scientific method to solve problems or discover new things — and that could be anyone.
• The cook — Wonders why the dal spilled over, and figures out the right flame and lid.
• The mechanic — Guesses what's wrong with a flat tyre, and tests each guess in turn.
• The electrician — Checks a faulty bulb step by step until the real fault is found.

Science Is a Team Sport

• We work together — Scientists across the world often work together in large teams. If you can't find an answer alone, ask a friend for help — discovering things together is more fun.
• It's a lifelong journey — Not all questions will be answered in Grade 6. Science is like a giant, unending jigsaw puzzle — every new discovery adds a piece, and sometimes old pieces move as our understanding improves.
